The Key Elements to a Basic Estate Plan

In this half-hour class we will discuss the basic elements of an estate plan by defining wills, powers of attorney, powers of attorney for health care and non-probate transfers. Questions are encouraged as we take a light look at many planning options for a basic estate.

Making Your End-Of-Life Decisions Clear

In this half-hour class we begin with a discussion on living wills and other forms of health care or end-of-life directives. For those who want, at the end of the class there is an opportunity, at no cost, to complete a Health Care Directive that accomplishes four things: Ensures that the person you want to speak for you has the legal authority to do so; Helps ensure that your wishes about your health care are known and respected; Avoids unnecessary, intrusive, and costly medical treatment at the point you no longer want it; and I believe most importantly, reduces the suffering experienced by your loved ones, because they will have your guidance.

Marriage or Commitment Ceremony: What is the Difference

In this half-hour class we discuss the law of marriage. Marriage is both a status and a contract. For some persons a legal Marriage is simply not an option. The reasons may be related to gender, spousal support, estate plans, or qualifying for government programs. We discuss in this class just how truly committed persons can actually and legally bind themselves together in many respects similar to what the law bestows on a traditional married couple. In simple terms attendees are shown how straight forward estate planning techniques and tools can achieve for them nearly the same result as a legal marriage. A couple might not have the status of marriage, but may achieve many of the contract rights associated with a marriage and show their commitment to each other, family and friends.
